Psychotherapy For Your Child

Working with children and young people is my specialism and I appreciate the bustling, rich and diverse society the younger generation are growing up in.  It is therefore important every child feels valued, heard and understood whilst they navigate the trickier parts of their development and experiences in childhood.  Families, friends, education and healthcare are all key to supporting childrens' healthy development, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing.

However, there are times where lived or new experiences become challenging, overwhelming or even traumatic for children to tolerate or understand.  Although families, schools and key services do their best to offer support, they are sometimes limited to what they can deliver to help a young person in crisis, or there may be extensive waiting lists prolonging your child's access to much needed support.

I offer private psychodynamic psychotherapy and counselling for children and young people who find themselves struggling to cope or find themselves in a mental health crisis but unsure of who to turn to.

A safe and confidential space is provided for young people to bring their current difficulties, worries and concerns.  I work alongside them to explore underlying causes, establish clarity and meaning, and link current feelings and behaviours with their own lived experiences, helping them to naturally seek out alternative ways of understanding and coping.

Developing a strong professional relationship with your child is crucial for any therapeutic work to be done or to promote positive, longer lasting change.  I therefore work in a way that is non judgemental, empathetic and containing so that they feel valued, self-assured and confident enough to unpack and better understand difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Your child is placed at the centre of their therapy as this empowers them to take control of their mental health, identify their inner strengths and be capable of developing their own reliable mental health toolkit that they can utilise in the future.

FAQs About Therapy

What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?

It’s a style of Psychotherapy that supports an individual’s understanding of how current thoughts, feelings and behaviours are shaped by their past experiences.

By getting to the root of the problem, your child is more likely to better understand their experiences, draw links between the past and current difficulties, and make longer lasting changes to reduce current suffering and difficult feelings.

How do sessions work?

Sessions are tailored to your child’s age, pace and capacity to avoid them becoming overwhelmed and to ensure they have a safe and containing experience. Working in this way puts your child at the centre of their therapy and supports them to make natural and longer lasting positive change within themselves.

Using play, talking and creative activities, we work together to locate deep rooted experiences hidden in their unconscious mind and gently bring these to the surface, into their awareness. This is where it can often feel overwhelming.

Working within the therapeutic relationship, I support children to start noticing patterns of behaviour, thoughts and feelings which occur ‘in the session’. This encourages them to gradually draw links between past experiences and difficulties experienced in the 'here and now'.

Observation, listening and interpretation are some of the tools I use to assist your child with unpacking, exploring and understanding traumatic experiences in a safe and containing way. A better understanding allows them to acknowledge true feelings and consider alternative ways of thinking about current problems and mental health.

Who can benefit from therapy?

Anyone facing emotional difficulties, stress, or needing personal support can benefit from counselling and psychotherapy.

Childhood trauma and poor mental health can significantly impact the ability to develop and maintain healthy personal, emotional and social relationships, impair cognition and learning, and diminish self-esteem and confidence.

Families are also affected when poor mental health is present in the home.  Counselling and Psychotherapy doesn't just support the child with their mental health and challenges, it influences a positive change within the family too.

Do you provide online counselling?

No. Online counselling is not available to children or adolescents, unless in extreme circumstances that make it difficult to attend in person.

Is it confidential?

Yes, all sessions are private and confidential, respecting client privacy unless risk and safeguarding is involved.

How long do sessions run?

Each session runs for 50 minutes.

If you are running late, the session will still finish at it's usual time.  I cannot offer additional time as this may affect other clients' appointments.

Is there parking?

Yes, free parking is available.

Can parents/ carers or siblings join?

Parents and carers are invited to initial consultation appointments.

Siblings are not usually invited to join therapy sessions, however there may be times this could be beneficial to your child's therapy.  If so, you shall be contacted to discuss this arrangement.

When your child begins attending counselling or psychotherapy, these appointments are private. The session will be between your child and counsellor/therapist only.

Are guide dogs allowed?

Yes. Guide dogs are welcome.
